Council's role

Uralla Shire Council is led by a Mayor and eight Councillors, all elected by the community to represent your interests and shape the future of our region. Together, they form the governing body of Council, working collaboratively to make decisions that benefit our community.

Their roles and responsibilities are defined under the NSW Local Government Act 1993.

Role of the Mayor

The Mayor is both the leader of Council and a key community figure. In this role, the Mayor:

  • Provides leadership to Council and the broader community
  • Promotes community cohesion and civic pride
  • Acts as the principal spokesperson for Council
  • Presides over Council meetings and ensures they run effectively
  • Guides the development and delivery of Council’s strategic plans and policies
  • Represents Council at regional, state and national levels
  • Builds partnerships with stakeholders and advocates for local priorities
  • Works closely with the General Manager to support strong governance and community engagement
  • Carries out civic and ceremonial duties
  • Leads performance reviews of the General Manager, in consultation with Councillors

Role of Councillors

Councillors are your representatives and, together, act as the decision-makers of Council. They play a vital role in shaping policies and ensuring community voices are heard.

As part of their role, Councillors:

  • Contribute actively to Council decision-making
  • Represent the interests of residents, ratepayers and the wider community
  • Help develop Council’s long-term plans and priorities
  • Advocate on behalf of community members
  • Support clear communication between the community and Council
  • Uphold Council decisions and policies
  • Continuously develop their knowledge and skills to serve effectively

As elected officials, Councillors are accountable to the community for Council’s performance and outcomes.
