Public Notice: Greater Bindweed (Calystegia silvatica)

On Display Indefinitely

Greater Bindweed is a vigorous, twining vine that produces large, white, trumpet-shaped flowers and green, arrow-shaped leaves.

This plant poses a serious problem because:

  • It smothers and kills other plants, choking out native vegetation.
  • It is difficult to control due to its extensive, brittle root system that regrows from small fragments and its large seed banks.
  • It invades native ecosystems and riparian zones, taking over these areas and threatening biodiversity.
  • It can also spread into gardens, rural areas, and agricultural land.

Control Measures:
Managing Greater Bindweed requires continuous effort, including:

  • Digging and removing roots carefully
  • Covering affected areas
  • Applying specific herbicides where appropriate

If you think you have spotted Greater Bindweed, please contact the council immediately. Your assistance helps protect our local environment.
