The strong community response to two recent draft documents, the Renewable Energy Strategic Action Plan and the Growth Management Strategy 2026–2046, highlights the level of community interest in, and concern about, the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

With key transmission infrastructure projects expected to progress later this year, there will be more opportunities for residents to attend information sessions, provide feedback and have their say on proposals that may affect our region.

Council's focus remains firmly on protecting community interests while ensuring Uralla Shire is well positioned to manage both the opportunities and challenges associated with the REZ. We continue to work closely with neighbouring councils, State agencies and industry through a range of forums focused on water security, workforce development, biodiversity, housing and local procurement opportunities.

I know many people have questions about the scale of renewable energy development proposed across the New England region. Council's role is to make sure our community's voice is heard and that issues such as water security, road infrastructure, worker accommodation, employment opportunities and long-term community benefits remain front and centre throughout the planning process.

Water security remains one of our highest priorities. Council has sought further information from EnergyCo regarding projected water requirements for the transmission project before making any decisions about potential local supply arrangements. We have been very clear that renewable energy development must not come at the expense of local households, agriculture, essential services or the environment. We will continue to advocate strongly for sustainable, long-term water solutions that protect existing users and support future growth.

Road infrastructure is another key focus. Council staff are reviewing proposed upgrades to Staces Road and working through agreements designed to ensure renewable energy proponents are responsible for repairing and restoring any damage caused by heavy construction traffic and oversized vehicle movements.

Importantly, we want to ensure the renewable energy transition delivers lasting benefits for our community. That means investment that strengthens local infrastructure and services, creates employment opportunities, supports local businesses and leaves a positive legacy for future generations.
