Council sets Councillor fees for 2026-2027

Council has adopted its Councillor fees for the 2026–2027 financial year in line with the framework established by the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal.

The annual fee for Councillors has been set at $11,290, consistent with the minimum level determined by the Tribunal for councils in the same category, and a 19 per cent reduction on the current fee of $13,930. The Mayor’s annual fee has been set at $31,510, reflecting the additional responsibilities of the role.

Council resolved to reduce the fee for Councillors as a gesture of solidarity with the community ahead of a forthcoming rates increase.

Under the Local Government Act, Council is required to review and set its fees each year within the range prescribed by the Tribunal. The adopted figures ensure compliance with statutory requirements while reflecting Council’s considered approach to remuneration.

Mayor Robert Bell said the decision followed careful consideration of Council’s obligations and the broader operating environment.

“Council reviews its fees annually in accordance with the Tribunal’s determination,” Mayor Bell said.

Councillors undertake a wide range of responsibilities, including representing the community, contributing to strategic decision-making, and supporting the delivery of local services and infrastructure.

Mayor Bell said he opposed setting the lower Councillor fee, arguing it does not provide reasonable compensation for the responsibilities of the role.

The adopted fees will take effect from 1 July 2026.
