A smarter way to manage our assets

Council is taking a significant step toward smarter, more efficient asset management through a new partnership with Asset Vision, an advanced digital platform designed to transform how we capture, assess, and maintain our infrastructure.
The first phase of this initiative has focused on our road network - and the results are already impressive. In April, Council staff completed a comprehensive data capture of the entire network in just one week. Using specialised vehicle-mounted cameras, high-resolution video was recorded at regular 10-metre intervals.
This data was then analysed using artificial intelligence, allowing the system to automatically detect road defects, such as potholes, and assess ride quality. For example, on Goodes Road, the system identified multiple defects and variations in ride smoothness, giving us a clear, data-driven picture of conditions on the ground.
This innovative approach provides Council with a detailed and current understanding of road conditions across the network, according to Acting General Manager Mick Raby.
“The data is now being used to refine the platform, helping us deliver consistent and reliable condition ratings,” Mick said.
“These insights support better planning, more targeted maintenance, and improved financial reporting.”
Importantly, the initial rollout came at no additional cost to Council. This represents a major saving compared to traditional methods.
While the current focus is on our road network, the benefits of the platform extend much further:
- More frequent and up-to-date data to support informed decision-making and strengthen funding applications
- Reduced reliance on external consultants, building greater internal capability
- Improved prioritisation of maintenance works, ensuring resources are used effectively
- Enhanced long-term planning and asset valuation accuracy
- Scalability, enabling integration of other asset types and operational areas in future.
“This initiative marks an important shift in how Council manages its assets,” Mick said.
“By moving away from fragmented systems and infrequent external assessments, we are embracing a more proactive, data-driven approach - one that delivers continuous improvement and greater local control.”
Ultimately, the Asset Vision partnership puts Council in a stronger position to plan, maintain, and invest in infrastructure, ensuring better service outcomes for our community while maintaining responsible financial management.
