Behind the Scenes of Uralla’s Australia Day Event
Published on 31 August 2025
Each year, Australia Day in Uralla is marked by a vibrant celebration. A street procession, live entertainment, community awards, and activities that bring people of all ages together at Alma Park. But behind the scenes, it’s a dedicated group of volunteers who make it all happen: the Australia Day Committee.
Established under Section 355 of the Local Government Act, the committee is tasked with planning and delivering the annual Australia Day event, including the Citizenship Ceremony and the Australia Day Awards. Their work ensures the day runs smoothly and is reflective of our community’s values.
The committee takes on a wide range of responsibilities, from coordinating event logistics and managing risk to selecting award recipients and shaping the day’s program. Members also play a key role in promoting the event throughout the Shire and working closely with Council to ensure everything runs to plan.
Wendy Westbrook, who has been involved with the committee for a number of years, says the experience has been a highlight of the community events we put on throughout the year.
“It’s a great way to get involved and work with the community to bring the event alive. I’ve enjoyed working with the committee and its volunteers for over 5 years now and it is a pleasure to recognise community leaders and celebrate a day that is uniquely Uralla.”
The 2025 celebration featured a breakfast at Balala Rural Fire Shed, a procession through town, and a full day of entertainment and activities including live bands, free meat raffles, painted rock hunts and much more. These moments are made possible by the committee’s year-round efforts.
The Australia Day Committee is currently welcoming new members who would like to be involved in planning the 2026 celebrations. The committee will include up to 12 community members and two councillor representatives and places a strong emphasis on inclusive representation. People from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Approximately four meetings are held from October to January at Council Chambers and members work collaboratively with Council staff to help shape the event.
