Uralla Shire Local Housing Strategy Development

Uralla Shire Council is pleased to announce the commencement of the Uralla Local Housing Strategy, a critical initiative aimed at shaping the future of housing in our community. This comprehensive strategy will focus on addressing long-term housing needs in Uralla, reflecting our commitment to supporting housing security and wellbeing.

Purpose of the Strategy

The Uralla Housing Strategy seeks to ensure that housing development in our Shire aligns with the changing needs of our community and the unique opportunities presented by the area’s involvement in large-scale renewable energy projects. It will focus on enhancing housing suitability, availability, and diversity to meet the needs of all residents.

The Uralla Housing Strategy will:

  • Consolidate current planning and housing frameworks.
  • Audit existing housing and land stock.
  • Examine economic and environmental factors influencing housing needs.
  • Engage with the local community, adjacent councils, and industry stakeholders.
  • Identify barriers to meeting future housing needs.
  • Provide recommendations to inform strategic land-use policy and facilitate new residential development.

Overview of the Process

The strategy will be developed through a collaborative approach involving key stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, developers, and planning experts. The process will include:

  • Comprehensive Data Collection and Analysis: Understanding current and future housing needs.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Gathering insights and preferences.
  • Development of Strategic Recommendations: Creating housing policy and planning actions.

Project Timeline:

  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: August – September 2024
  • Draft Local Housing Strategy: October 2024

Community Engagement

Community input is vital to the success of the Uralla Housing Strategy. Engagement opportunities will include listening posts, online surveys, one-on-one meetings, and written submissions. The initial round of consultations is scheduled to begin next week.

Council invites all residents and stakeholders to participate in the consultation process.
